One hundred thousand creators. Five African countries. One million dollars. Free access to Google’s Gemini AI tools. This is the size of what Google and actor Idris Elba announced on 1 July, and it is not a vague pledge about the future of African creativity. It is a specific, funded programme with a target number attached, which already puts it in a different category from most tech company Africa announcements.

The partnership brings together Google and the Elba Hope Foundation; the charitable arm of the British-Sierra Leonean actor whose father is from Sierra Leone and whose mother is Ghanaian. The initiative will cover the cost of Gemini and other Google digital products for creators in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and Sierra Leone. James Manyika, Google’s Senior Vice President for Research and Technology, confirmed the details. The goal is to remove the price barrier that has kept premium AI tools out of reach for the creators who need them most.

The five countries were chosen carefully. Nigeria and South Africa are Africa’s two largest economies and home to the continent’s most developed creator scenes; Nollywood, Afrobeats, a massive YouTube and podcasting community. Ghana and Kenya are lively digital creative hubs with growing audiences at home and in the diaspora. Sierra Leone is Elba’s heritage country, and its inclusion signals that this is not purely a commercial exercise targeting the largest markets.

One hundred thousand creators with access to Gemini is not a small number. It is large enough that if the programme is executed well, you will see its effects; in the quality of content coming out of Lagos and Accra, in the storytelling sophistication of Ghanaian and Kenyan creators, in the types of products African independent creators are able to build and sell. This is the scale at which a programme stops being symbolic and starts being structural.

The Elba Hope Foundation angle is important because it changes the narrative frame. When a corporation runs an African creator programme alone, it reads as market development; giving creators tools so they become dependent on your ecosystem. When an African diaspora foundation is co-funding and co-leading, it reads differently. It becomes an investment from people who have a stake in what African creativity becomes, not just in what African creators can buy. Whether that distinction holds in practice depends on how the Elba Foundation’s involvement shapes programme decisions, but the principle matters.

The honest challenge: 100,000 is a large number to reach meaningfully across five countries. The question is whether this programme gives creators actual training and community support, or just gives them free accounts. Free access to Gemini without knowing how to use it well will not move the needle. Free access plus a community of practice, tutorials built in African languages and creative contexts, and mentorship from working creators who have already integrated these tools; that is what transforms creative output.

In May 2026, The Pope wrote a declaration about artificial intelligence. A Catholic university in Abuja read it, took it seriously, and became the first institution in Africa to formally sign the resulting compact. That is the story, and it is more interesting than it might initially appear.

Veritas University, Abuja, signed the Humanitas AI Compact at its 154th Senate session on 1 July 2026. The compact is the institutional response to Magnifica Humanitas, a papal declaration from Pope Leo XIV calling on universities and institutions of higher learning to take responsibility for ensuring AI advances human dignity rather than diminishing it. The Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Ichoku, signed on behalf of the institution, becoming the first African university to make this commitment formal.

Other co-signatories include the Commonwealth Forum in London, the Centre for AI, Digital Justice and Economic Rights (CADER), and the African Institute of Public Health in Addis Ababa. This is not a Nigerian story alone. It is a cross-continental, cross-institutional commitment to a specific vision of what ethical AI looks like — one grounded in the dignity of the most vulnerable people, not in the convenience of the most powerful.

By being the first African institution to sign the Humanitas AI Compact, Veritas University is placing African higher education at the beginning of a global conversation rather than at the end of it. The compact originated from a papal declaration, but its scope is explicitly cross-denominational and cross-institutional. The question it asks — who should AI serve? — is one every African university, hospital, and government agency needs to be asking right now.

The commitment to direct AI innovations towards “the poor, the sick, migrants, people displaced by war, women, girls, and other vulnerable groups” is not a nice-to-have. It is the entire point. Most of the AI tools being built and deployed globally are designed around the needs of people who already have resources. The Humanitas Compact is asking institutions to reverse that priority. A Nigerian university signing first is a statement that Africa is not going to wait for Silicon Valley to build AI for us.

Oracle has been in Morocco for over a year. Its Casablanca R&D facility opened in June 2025. Its first public cloud region went live in February. And now, with a ceremony attended by Morocco’s head of government, its investment minister, and the US Ambassador, the company has opened a second research and development centre — this one in Agadir, a coastal city well outside the Casablanca–Rabat corridor where most Moroccan tech investment clusters.

The Agadir opening is significant not just because of its size; Oracle plans to grow its Moroccan workforce to nearly 1,000 professionals — but because of where it is. Forty per cent of Oracle’s new Moroccan roles are planned outside Casablanca and the Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region. That is a deliberate choice, and it signals something about how Morocco is trying to build a tech ecosystem that does not just replicate the capital-city concentration that has limited digital economies elsewhere on the continent.

Oracle’s $140 million Morocco commitment by 2030, two cloud regions, and two R&D centres make Morocco one of the most active sites of American enterprise technology investment in Africa right now. And Morocco is making its move to become the infrastructure gateway between Africa and the rest of the world.

Morocco is quietly building one of the most credible cases on the African continent for what serious tech ecosystem development looks like. Two Oracle cloud regions, a $140 million investment commitment, a workforce of nearly 1,000 professionals — and critically, a deliberate policy to spread that investment beyond the capital. That is not an accident. That is the Ministry of Digital Transition executing a plan.

The detail about Oracle’s Casablanca R&D centre converting 94% of eligible interns to full-time roles deserves a moment. That number tells you the skills are there. It tells you the pipeline works. It tells you that what African countries often frame as a talent shortage is, in many cases, an access-and-investment shortage. When a global company builds the infrastructure and shows up consistently, the talent shows up too.

The lesson for Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya is not to copy Morocco’s approach wholesale — different countries, different contexts. The lesson is the consistency. More than 400,000 African students enrol in universities abroad every year. For most of them, the process of finding, applying to, and getting accepted at those universities runs through a patchwork of independent consultants and recruitment agencies. An industry that critics describe as opaque, inconsistent, and prone to steering students toward the universities that pay the highest commissions rather than those that actually fit them.

Every year, tens of thousands of West African students leave to study abroad and face the same problem: finding trustworthy information about which universities accept African students, what the real costs are, and whether their qualifications will transfer and be recognised. The existing system — dominated by private agents who earn commissions from universities — has a structural incentive to match students to whoever is paying the most, not whoever is the best fit. That is a real problem, and Craydel is attacking it with a real tool.

The AI matching approach matters because the information asymmetry in the study abroad market is significant. A student in Kumasi or Tema does not have easy access to accurate, up-to-date information about acceptance rates, scholarship availability, and post-graduation work visa rules for dozens of universities across dozens of countries. A well-trained AI platform can surface that information in seconds. Nigeria has a doctor-to-patient ratio of about 1 doctor for every 2,500 people. The WHO recommends 1 for every 1,000. The gap is not closing fast; training a doctor takes years, and many of the doctors Nigeria trains leave for better opportunities abroad. This is not a criticism. It is a structural reality that telemedicine, at its best, can help address.

What makes the Omeife-MySmartMedic integration interesting is the combination of two things that do not always go together: specialist-level capability and cultural fit. Generic health AI tools built in Silicon Valley or London may understand symptoms, but they have not been trained to understand how a patient in Kogi State describes pain, or the cultural factors that shape how a woman in rural Anambra talks about reproductive health. Omeife was built in Abuja, by Nigerians, for African contexts. That matters in healthcare more than in almost any other domain.

The hybrid model — AI for triage and early diagnosis, licensed doctors for clinical decisions — is also the right design. AI that replaces doctors entirely is not appropriate for high-stakes medical decisions yet, and probably not for a long time. But AI that helps a doctor see more patients, flag urgent cases faster, and give rural patients a first-line response before they make a long journey to a hospital? That is genuinely useful, right now, at scale.

E don happen. Nigeria built the robot. Now the robot is helping people see a specialist without leaving their village. That is the kind of story that tends to get missed in the global AI conversation, but it is the kind of progress that will matter most on this continent.

On 24 June 2026, African institutions gathered at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, specifically to confront the security challenges that AI is creating.

This was not another side panel at a global tech summit, or an African session at a conference designed for someone else. This was a dedicated, African-convened conference organised by the UN Economic Commission for Africa and Ethiopia’s own Cybersecurity Association, with an agenda built around Africa’s specific risks,  gaps, and  opportunities.

They called it the International Conference on Cybersecurity in the Era of Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence. The theme: Risks, Resilience, and Africa’s Strategic Imperatives. The timing could not have been better.

• The inaugural International Conference on Cybersecurity and AI opened on June 24, 2026 at the UN Conference Centre in Addis Ababa — the first continental-level AI security dialogue organised by African institutions.
• Convened jointly by UNECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa) and the Ethiopian Cybersecurity Association, with participation from policymakers, security practitioners, and technology leaders across the continent.
• UNECA Deputy Executive Secretary Mama Keita set the tone in her opening remarks: “Those who invest, innovate, and govern with foresight reap the greatest benefits, while those who hesitate risk relegation to the role of consumers rather than creators of the future”
• Ethiopia’s legislative framework was highlighted as a continental benchmark — the country has passed a Critical Infrastructure Protection Proclamation, Data Protection Proclamation, Electronic Transaction and Signature Proclamation, and Cybercrime Proclamation

• The central message: cybersecurity in the AI era is not an IT issue — it is a leadership, governance, and national sovereignty issue, and Africa must treat it accordingly

This conference happened around the same time that the US government suspended access to the world’s most powerful AI model with no warning to anyone outside its own borders. It opened the same week that researchers were warning that AI audio disinformation could sweep through Africa’s radio networks without any continent-specific defences. Africa’s first continental AI security conference was not scheduled in response to these events, but it spoke directly to them anyway.

For years, the global AI governance conversation has happened in rooms where Africa was mostly absent. The frameworks being built in Brussels, the executive orders coming out of Washington, the regulatory sandboxes being designed in Singapore — none of these were designed with African infrastructure, African threat environments, or African governance capacity in mind. Africa has been adapting to other people’s rules.

What Addis Ababa represents is the beginning of something different. African institutions deciding that this conversation needs to happen in Africa, for Africa, with African voices at the centre. It is early. One conference does not build a continental framework. But it begins the relationships, the institutional memory, and the shared language that frameworks require.

The goal is not for Africa to have its own AI security rules just to be different. It is to have rules that actually reflect what AI looks like when it lands in Nairobi, Accra, Lagos, and Kigali — not just in San Francisco and London. That process started this week in Addis Ababa.

60% of the startups that just completed Google’s Africa AI accelerator are profitable. They are not just gaining momentum or promising. They are profitable, averaging a revenue of $60,000 monthly.  These startups are building real products and serving real customers in eight African countries.

This is what AI adoption in Africa actually looks like as a present reality, rather than a future promise.

Google’s Africa MD, Alex Okosi, was at the graduation event in Nairobi, and even as he celebrated what the class had built, he said something valuable: investment in Africa has not kept pace with adoption. The founders are ready, but the ecosystem around them is not.

• Since the accelerator launched, Google has trained 8 million Africans in digital skills, supported 35,000 SMEs, and backed more than 190 startups that have collectively raised over $300 million.

When people talk about Africa and AI, the conversation often sounds like a question: Is Africa ready for this? What Google’s 2026 cohort answers, clearly, is: the founders are ready. They are building, shipping, and getting paid.

The real question is whether the rest of the ecosystem will catch up to them.

Africa at 1% of global data centre capacity is not a technology problem. It is an investment decision. Every African startup in that cohort is building on infrastructure owned by someone else, in a data centre on another continent, subject to pricing decisions and government directives that nobody on this continent controls. It has happened and it will keep happening as long as the only serious compute available to African builders is hosted abroad.

The Aeonian Project in Uganda is part of the answer. Google’s own planned South African cloud region is part of the answer, but they are still coming. You type “buy me 2,000 naira airtime” to your AI assistant. The assistant buys the airtime. You get a notification that it is done. You did not open a banking app. You did not copy an account number. You did not do anything except ask.

That is what Paystack Index is, and it went live in Nigeria this week.

Paystack launched Paystack Index on June 25 — an experimental product built through TSG Labs, the venture studio arm of The Stack Group, the holding company Paystack created earlier this year. It is the first time an African fintech has built payment infrastructure specifically designed for AI agents to use on behalf of human users — and Paystack CEO Shola Akinlade is betting it will matter a lot more very soon.

KINI BIG DEAL

The most important thing about Paystack Index is not what it does today. Buying airtime through ChatGPT is useful, but it is not world-changing. What matters is what it signals about where commerce is going — and the fact that Paystack is building for that future now, before the market is there, instead of scrambling to catch up when it arrives.

Shola Akinlade’s comparison is worth sitting with. Browsers going down, agents going up. A few years ago, if you told someone that billions of people would make purchases without ever visiting a website — just by opening an app and tapping a button — it would have sounded far-fetched. That is how eCommerce works today. The leap from app-based commerce to agent-based commerce is the same kind of shift, and it will feel just as inevitable in retrospect.

For Nigeria specifically, this is interesting because the starting conditions are different from the global baseline. Nigerian consumers are already comfortable with unconventional payment flows — USSD codes, bank transfer links, wallet top-ups. The friction that makes agentic commerce feel unfamiliar in Western markets may feel much smaller here, where people have never been attached to the credit-card-on-a-website model in the first place.

The product is genuinely experimental. Paystack is not hiding that. They said themselves they do not expect mass adoption for a year. But the businesses that build the infrastructure for the next generation of commerce before that generation arrives are the ones who end up owning it.

Nigeria has a national AI strategy, but NITDA is saying that is simply not enough. We need execution.

The National Information Technology Development Agency gathered some of Nigeria’s most important public and private sector institutions in Abuja this week for the AI Summit Nigeria 2026. Microsoft and MTN were co-hosts, and even the Nigeria Customs Service was present. The National Identity Management Commission showed up, Galaxy Backbone was there.

The theme of the summit was something sharper than launching something new: “From Policy to Progress: Accelerating Responsible AI Adoption for Nigeria’s Digital Decade.” The word ‘progress’ in that sentence is not just a random word. Nigeria has had AI policy documents, strategy papers, and regulatory frameworks for a while now, so the question the summit was really asking is: why has the execution not caught up?

NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, set the tone. His message, delivered by NITDA’s Acting Director of Regulation and Compliance Barrister Emmanuel Edet, was direct: trust is the foundation of everything. “Without public trust, AI adoption will be stalled. Without accountability, innovation will not scale sustainably, and without transparency, citizens will lose confidence in the systems designed to serve them.”

KINI BIG DEAL

The fact that Nigeria’s AI summit this year was themed “From Policy to Progress” is both an admission and a commitment. It is an admission that the policy era has run long enough. And it is a commitment, in front of the most important tech and government institutions in the country, that the next phase needs to look different.

What makes this moment worth watching is the attendees. This was not a conference for AI enthusiasts. Nigeria Customs Service was there. NIMC was there. These are the agencies that interact with ordinary Nigerians every single day — at border crossings, at ID registration offices, at ports. If AI adoption moves into those institutions in a serious way, the impact will reach millions of Nigerians who have never opened a laptop.

The digital sovereignty argument that NITDA put forward matters too. Nigeria processing its citizens’ data on foreign infrastructure, running its government systems on foreign platforms, and paying recurring fees to foreign companies for software built elsewhere is a pattern that compounds over time. The argument is not anti-globalisation. It is about building enough local capacity that Nigeria participates in the AI economy on its own terms, not entirely on other people’s.

The next twelve months will show whether Abuja’s AI summit was a conversation or a turning point. The attendance suggests the right people were in the room. The theme suggests they know what is at stake. Shine ya eyes — the real work starts now.
