On 24 June 2026, African institutions gathered at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, specifically to confront the security challenges that AI is creating.

This was not another side panel at a global tech summit, or an African session at a conference designed for someone else. This was a dedicated, African-convened conference organised by the UN Economic Commission for Africa and Ethiopia’s own Cybersecurity Association, with an agenda built around Africa’s specific risks,  gaps, and  opportunities.

They called it the International Conference on Cybersecurity in the Era of Digital Transformation and Artificial Intelligence. The theme: Risks, Resilience, and Africa’s Strategic Imperatives. The timing could not have been better.

• The inaugural International Conference on Cybersecurity and AI opened on June 24, 2026 at the UN Conference Centre in Addis Ababa — the first continental-level AI security dialogue organised by African institutions.
• Convened jointly by UNECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa) and the Ethiopian Cybersecurity Association, with participation from policymakers, security practitioners, and technology leaders across the continent.

This conference happened around the same time that the US government suspended access to the world’s most powerful AI model with no warning to anyone outside its own borders. It opened the same week that researchers were warning that AI audio disinformation could sweep through Africa’s radio networks without any continent-specific defences. Africa’s first continental AI security conference was not scheduled in response to these events, but it spoke directly to them anyway.

For years, the global AI governance conversation has happened in rooms where Africa was mostly absent. The frameworks being built in Brussels, the executive orders coming out of Washington, the regulatory sandboxes being designed in Singapore — none of these were designed with African infrastructure, African threat environments, or African governance capacity in mind. Africa has been adapting to other people’s rules.

What Addis Ababa represents is the beginning of something different. African institutions deciding that this conversation needs to happen in Africa, for Africa, with African voices at the centre. It is early. One conference does not build a continental framework. But it begins the relationships, the institutional memory, and the shared language that frameworks require.

The goal is not for Africa to have its own AI security rules just to be different. It is to have rules that actually reflect what AI looks like when it lands in Nairobi, Accra, Lagos, and Kigali — not just in San Francisco and London. That process started this week in Addis Ababa.

60% of the startups that just completed Google’s Africa AI accelerator are profitable. They are not just gaining momentum or promising. They are profitable, averaging a revenue of $60,000 monthly.  These startups are building real products and serving real customers in eight African countries.

This is what AI adoption in Africa actually looks like as a present reality, rather than a future promise.

Google’s Africa MD, Alex Okosi, was at the graduation event in Nairobi, and even as he celebrated what the class had built, he said something valuable: investment in Africa has not kept pace with adoption. The founders are ready, but the ecosystem around them is not.

• Since the accelerator launched, Google has trained 8 million Africans in digital skills, supported 35,000 SMEs, and backed more than 190 startups that have collectively raised over $300 million.

When people talk about Africa and AI, the conversation often sounds like a question: Is Africa ready for this? What Google’s 2026 cohort answers, clearly, is: the founders are ready. They are building, shipping, and getting paid.

The real question is whether the rest of the ecosystem will catch up to them.

Africa at 1% of global data centre capacity is not a technology problem. It is an investment decision. Every African startup in that cohort is building on infrastructure owned by someone else, in a data centre on another continent, subject to pricing decisions and government directives that nobody on this continent controls. It has happened and it will keep happening as long as the only serious compute available to African builders is hosted abroad.

The Aeonian Project in Uganda is part of the answer. Google’s own planned South African cloud region is part of the answer, but they are still coming. In the meantime, the builders are here, the products are live, and the revenue is real. The only thing missing is the capital and infrastructure to match what the founders have already built.

You type “buy me 2,000 naira airtime” to your AI assistant. The assistant buys the airtime. You get a notification that it is done. You did not open a banking app. You did not copy an account number. You did not do anything except ask.

That is what Paystack Index is, and it went live in Nigeria this week.

Paystack launched Paystack Index on June 25 — an experimental product built through TSG Labs, the venture studio arm of The Stack Group, the holding company Paystack created earlier this year. It is the first time an African fintech has built payment infrastructure specifically designed for AI agents to use on behalf of human users — and Paystack CEO Shola Akinlade is betting it will matter a lot more very soon.

• Paystack acknowledges this is early-stage; they do not expect significant traction for at least another year, and are curating merchants carefully for now.
• Anchor also launched an MCP server this month allowing AI agents to access its financial API — signalling growing momentum across Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem toward AI-native payment infrastructure.

The most important thing about Paystack Index is not what it does today. Buying airtime through ChatGPT is useful, but it is not world-changing. What matters is what it signals about where commerce is going — and the fact that Paystack is building for that future now, before the market is there, instead of scrambling to catch up when it arrives.

Shola Akinlade’s comparison is worth sitting with. Browsers going down, agents going up. A few years ago, if you told someone that billions of people would make purchases without ever visiting a website — just by opening an app and tapping a button — it would have sounded far-fetched. That is how eCommerce works today. The leap from app-based commerce to agent-based commerce is the same kind of shift, and it will feel just as inevitable in retrospect.

For Nigeria specifically, this is interesting because the starting conditions are different from the global baseline. Nigerian consumers are already comfortable with unconventional payment flows — USSD codes, bank transfer links, wallet top-ups. The friction that makes agentic commerce feel unfamiliar in Western markets may feel much smaller here, where people have never been attached to the credit-card-on-a-website model in the first place.

The product is genuinely experimental. Paystack is not hiding that. They said themselves they do not expect mass adoption for a year. But the businesses that build the infrastructure for the next generation of commerce before that generation arrives are the ones who end up owning it.

Nigeria has a national AI strategy, but NITDA is saying that is simply not enough. We need execution.

The National Information Technology Development Agency gathered some of Nigeria’s most important public and private sector institutions in Abuja this week for the AI Summit Nigeria 2026. Microsoft and MTN were co-hosts, and even the Nigeria Customs Service was present. The National Identity Management Commission showed up, Galaxy Backbone was there.

The theme of the summit was something sharper than launching something new: “From Policy to Progress: Accelerating Responsible AI Adoption for Nigeria’s Digital Decade.” The word ‘progress’ in that sentence is not just a random word. Nigeria has had AI policy documents, strategy papers, and regulatory frameworks for a while now, so the question the summit was really asking is: why has the execution not caught up?

NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, set the tone. His message, delivered by NITDA’s Acting Director of Regulation and Compliance Barrister Emmanuel Edet, was direct: trust is the foundation of everything. “Without public trust, AI adoption will be stalled. Without accountability, innovation will not scale sustainably, and without transparency, citizens will lose confidence in the systems designed to serve them.”

• The summit generated focused conversation on regulatory clarity, digital sovereignty, and the balance between innovation, collaboration, and strategic control of Nigeria’s tech future.

The fact that Nigeria’s AI summit this year was themed “From Policy to Progress” is both an admission and a commitment. It is an admission that the policy era has run long enough. And it is a commitment, in front of the most important tech and government institutions in the country, that the next phase needs to look different.

What makes this moment worth watching is the attendees. This was not a conference for AI enthusiasts. Nigeria Customs Service was there. NIMC was there. These are the agencies that interact with ordinary Nigerians every single day — at border crossings, at ID registration offices, at ports. If AI adoption moves into those institutions in a serious way, the impact will reach millions of Nigerians who have never opened a laptop.

The digital sovereignty argument that NITDA put forward matters too. Nigeria processing its citizens’ data on foreign infrastructure, running its government systems on foreign platforms, and paying recurring fees to foreign companies for software built elsewhere is a pattern that compounds over time. The argument is not anti-globalisation. It is about building enough local capacity that Nigeria participates in the AI economy on its own terms, not entirely on other people’s.

The next twelve months will show whether Abuja’s AI summit was a conversation or a turning point. The attendance suggests the right people were in the room. The theme suggests they know what is at stake. Shine ya eyes — the real work starts now.

Tunisia is not the first country that comes to mind when you think about African tech investment. But in Sfax — Tunisia’s second city, a port town on the Mediterranean — a startup called RoboCare has been quietly building something that matters across the whole continent: an AI system that tells farmers exactly how much water, fertiliser, and attention each part of their land needs.

This week, 216 Capital put a six-figure investment into RoboCare to help it grow beyond Tunisia and into Africa and the Middle East more broadly.

The timing makes sense. Water scarcity is getting worse across North Africa and the Sahel. Input costs, like seeds and fertiliser, have risen sharply across the continent. Farmers are being asked to produce more from land that is increasingly stressed. The old ways of farming by feel and experience are not enough when the climate has changed the rules.

Agriculture is one of AI’s biggest promises for Africa, and where it is currently least visible. The startup press covers fintech, healthcare, logistics, etc. Agritech gets much quieter coverage, even though farming is the economic backbone of most African countries and the livelihood of most African people.

RoboCare’s numbers are not theoretical. A 35% reduction in water usage on a farm in North Africa, where aquifers are depleting and rainfall is increasingly unpredictable, is not a marketing claim. It is a survival number. And a 20% yield improvement on a smallholder farm in Tunisia or Morocco does not just affect that farmer; it affects the families who eat from that land, the businesses who buy from that farmer, and the community that depends on both.

What is interesting about RoboCare’s approach is the specificity. They did not try to build a global precision agriculture platform that works for wheat in Kansas and olives in Tunisia. They built for olives in Tunisia, and by doing so, built something that actually works there. That is the lesson too many African startups have learned the hard way: technology built for everywhere often works well nowhere.

The question now is whether 216 Capital’s investment translates into the kind of expansion that takes a Tunisia-proven platform into Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, or Ethiopia — countries with enormous agricultural sectors and similar water and input cost pressures. If RoboCare can prove its model across a few more markets, it stops being a Tunisian success story and becomes a continental one.

Walk through any market in Lagos or Nairobi and you will find the same thing: a trader holding a phone, managing orders on WhatsApp, posting products on Instagram, trying to keep track of what sold and what is still in stock, all in their head, across three different platforms, with no data, no analytics, and no way to know if their business is actually growing.

That is how most of Africa’s eCommerce works. The continent’s online shopping market is worth over $55 billion and is projected to reach $112 billion by 2029. But most of the people driving that market are doing it from their phones, without a proper digital storefront, because the tools that exist were not built with them in mind.

Payaza, a Pan-African fintech company, launched Shopaza in Lagos on June 18 to change that. The idea is simple: give African merchants and diaspora sellers a real digital store, built on a payment system that already works, with AI doing the heavy lifting on setup.

The social media storefront is one of the most creative workarounds the African entrepreneurial spirit ever invented. Africans turned Instagram DMs and WhatsApp broadcast lists into legitimate sales channels before most of the world’s eCommerce platforms even knew those markets existed. The ingenuity is real.

But ingenuity and infrastructure are two different things. A business that cannot see its own data cannot grow beyond what one person can hold in their head. You cannot restock intelligently if you do not know what sold. You cannot plan marketing if you cannot see when your customers are active. You cannot expand if your entire business lives in three apps on a phone that could get stolen tomorrow.

What Shopaza is offering — especially the instant settlement piece — is not just convenience. It is cash flow. In Nigerian business, the gap between “the customer paid” and “the money is in my account” can mean you cannot restock, cannot pay your supplier, cannot keep the operation running. Payaza’s in-house payment infrastructure closing that gap is the kind of practical detail that makes the difference between a merchant who scales and one who stays stuck.

The AI store builder is also worth pausing on. For a first-time digital merchant, setting up a proper eCommerce store has always meant navigating templates, writing product descriptions, researching pricing, and uploading images — hours of work that a trader with twenty products and a market stall to run simply does not have. Dropping a photo and letting the AI handle the rest is not a gimmick. For the right merchant, it is the difference between signing up and giving up.

Most AI healthcare products are designed for hospitals, clinics, and patients in wealthy countries. They assume high-bandwidth connectivity, expensive devices, and specialists to interpret the results. That is not the healthcare reality for hundreds of millions of people across this continent.

What makes Care-Africa worth watching is its edge. The frontline clinic without a lab. The health worker who needs a reliable answer quickly, in a setting where wrong answers cost lives.

AI designed for that environment has to earn its keep differently. It has to work where the internet is unreliable. It has to be usable without advanced training. It has to produce results that a community health worker can act on immediately, not outputs that require a specialist to interpret.

€21 million is not a large number in the context of global health funding, but if the tools produced can correctly diagnose a sick child at a village clinic in three minutes instead of three days, the return on that investment is not measured in euros.

This is the AI development story Africa needs more of, not AI built for Africa by people who have never been there, but AI built for specific African conditions, by researchers who understand them.

The restaurant business is one of the hardest businesses to run anywhere in the world. The restaurant owner working 14-hour days in Johannesburg or Lagos or Nairobi does not need a fancier loyalty program. They need a system that tells them what to order, when to order it, which menu items are dragging down their margins, and what time to add staff on a Friday evening.

That is what an AI-native operating system designed for restaurants can actually do. And the fact that Yoco — a company that knows the African SME context intimately — is the one bringing it is significant.

There’s a general misgiving in Africa that if a solution doesn’t come out of a glass building in Silicon Valley, or if it hasn’t raised $50 million from a VC, it’s not ready for prime time.

But if there’s one thing Lagos teaches you, it’s that the most potent ideas can be developed from the smallest regions.

In 2023, a brilliant UNILAG student , Saheed Azeez, entered a hackathon organized by Bluechip Technologies.  Now, ordinary people would have built another generic chatbot or a lazy OpenAI wrapper to summarize PDFs.

Not Saheed. He looked at the landscape and noticed AI had a massive accent problem.

So he built YarnGPT; an AI that reads text aloud, not like an American news anchor, but like a proper Nigerian. It speaks Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa with the right inflections, the right cadence, and the right soul.

At that hackathon, Saheed came second. He got his prize and everyone thought that was the end.

Fast forward three years later. On June 10, 2026, at the third edition of the Bluechip Data and AI Summit  in Lagos, Bluechip CEO Kazeem Tewogbade announced that Bluechip Technologies has officially acquired YarnGPT.

The big deal here is the undeniable resonance of a product built entirely for its own environment, and how deeply encouraging it is to see home-grown innovation take the center stage.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence has signed a $190 million agreement with UK-based technology firm MARSS Group to deploy an advanced AI-powered command-and-control system across the country’s military and border security operations. The agreement, formalised in March 2026 and now entering active deployment, is one of the largest defence technology investments Nigeria has made in recent history.

At the core of the system is NiDAR: an AI-powered platform that pulls together data from radar arrays, thermal cameras, sonar sensors, and surveillance equipment into a single, unified real-time picture of what is happening across Nigeria’s air, land, maritime, and underground domains simultaneously.

Most large defence contracts in Africa follow the same pattern: a foreign company builds the system, deploys the system, trains a small number of local staff just enough to keep the lights on, and the African country pays — and then keeps paying for maintenance, upgrades, and ongoing support. Dependency is baked into the contract.

Nigeria has explicitly structured this one differently. The goal is to build the human infrastructure to own and adapt the system over time. Training facilities. Local command centres. Nigerian technicians who understand the architecture well enough to modify it independently.

Whether that commitment survives the realities of implementation is a separate conversation; these things often look different on the ground than they do in an announcement. But the fact that technological sovereignty is being built into the agreement at all is a meaningful signal about how Nigeria’s leadership is thinking about the relationship between AI, defence, and national independence.

AI in national security is no longer a concept discussed at conferences. On this continent, it is now a signed, funded contract.
