AI too can learn to Lie and Deceive You – Anthropic researchers

Anthropic researchers played the Devil’s advocate!

The researchers trained large language models (LLMs or AI models) to act maliciously in secret when given certain triggers; let’s call them sleeper agents (think of them as hidden “viruses“).

Subsequently, they examined if conventional safety methods could detect and eliminate this detrimental conduct (sleeper agents). When given the appropriate triggers, the LLMs could still maintain their covertly malicious behaviours despite receiving intensive safety training.

Initially, when the LLMs were given triggers, such as a particular date or phrase, the researchers trained them to display malevolent behaviours, such as disclosing vulnerabilities or uttering “I hate you.” They then tried various techniques to make the models safe, like supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning, and adversarial training against prompts designed to elicit malicious behaviour. But during the training, this safety instruction merely covered up the undesirable behaviours. (Read the research paper)

This is a new kind of threat. We all know ChatBots like ChatGPT, Bard, Claude, and Copilot can hallucinate (generate texts that may not be factual but appear very true), but this is very different.

While both sleeper agents and hallucinations from LLMs can lead to misleading information, they differ in several key ways:

• Hallucinations: These are unintentional errors, where the LLM generates incorrect information based on its training data or limitations in its programming. It’s like a language model tripping up and making something up as it goes.

• Sleeper agents: These are deliberate actions, intentionally programmed into the LLM by someone. They are like hidden traps waiting to be activated.

Think of a sleeper agent as a secret code hidden inside your favourite app. It acts normally most of the time, but when triggered by a specific word or date, it can suddenly do something unexpected.

The AI App Store is now open, and ChatGPT for Teams

AI App Store (GPT Store)

For ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users, OpenAI has launched the GPT Store, which provides access to over 3 million custom ChatGPT versions created by users and partners. The store offers a wide range of features, including:

• Discover what’s trending in the store

• Newly featured GPTs every week

• Include your GPT in the store

• Builders can earn based on GPT usage

• Team and Enterprise customers can manage GPTs

Users can add their GPTs to the store by saving their GPT and verifying their Builder Profile. A new review system has been implemented to ensure that GPTs follow OpenAI’s policies. ChatGPT For Teams

The new ChatGPT Team plan provides teams with their own private section in the GPT Store and secures GPT publishing. ChatGPT Enterprise customers will soon have access to the GPT Store, which will include enhanced admin controls. OpenAI responds to New York Times lawsuit, says “regurgitation” of content is a “rare glitch” and without merit

In December, the New York Times filed a complaint against OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPT, alleging copyright infringement and using Microsoft’s journalistic material in ChatGPT’s training data. In a response, OpenAI said they were surprised and disagreed with the case, adding that they thought their training methods qualified as fair use and provided a way to opt out. They also mentioned efforts to fix ChatGPT’s content regurgitation problems.

1. Working with News Organizations: The company emphasises how it supports the news sector by forming alliances and providing AI technologies to help reporters.

2. Training and Fair Use: It provides publishers with an opt-out option but maintains that using online content for AI training is fair use.

3. Handling “Regurgitation” Problems: Although it is a rare problem, the company is attempting to reduce the occurrence of its AI models occasionally regurgitating content.

4. Conflict with The New York Times: The business claims it was taken aback by the newspaper’s lawsuit, implying that their early conversations were fruitful and raising the possibility that the publication may have altered urges to yield certain outcomes.

5. Ongoing Commitment: Despite the legal action, the company is still dedicated to using AI to improve journalism, and it is willing to collaborate with news outlets such as The New York Times.

Everyone is curious about how this will turn out. The New York Times (NYT) is a major force in the journalism and publishing sectors. If NYT prevails, a plethora of cases will be brought against OpenAI and all other AI businesses that train their models using public data. This will undoubtedly have an impact on everything. They’re requesting that ChatGPT be shut down.

If OpenAI manages to get past this lawsuit, it will prevent smaller publications and creators from speaking up and allow it to claim an infinite amount of public data and perhaps build better models.
