A new startup in the UAE, MetisJean, has launched with a simple pitch: stop renting AI from servers abroad and run it inside your own company instead.

Major Highlights

  • Meet Jean: MetisJean is the company behind Jean, a sovereign AI operating system that businesses install in their own infrastructure. Jean plugs into internal systems like apps, messaging and databases, and learns how the business actually runs.
  • Cheaper to run: In the company’s benchmark tests, Jean cut token usage at LLMs by 90%. When a business sends a new request through Jean, she saves the code and workflow, then reuses it for repeat requests instead of calling an outside LLM again.
  • Fewer wrong answers: Because Jean works from the company’s own data, the company says she avoids hallucinations. If she doesn’t have the information, or the user’s role doesn’t allow access to it, she simply says so.
  • Follows the rules: Jean is built to act within company policies and industry, national and global regulations. She works in English and Arabic.
  • The money: MetisJean raised $3 million (AED 11m) in pre-seed funding. The product is now shipping to its first customers, and the startup is looking for another $5 million (AED 18.4m) from funds in the region.
  • UAE only, for now: All of the company’s revenue and growth will come from the UAE. It is targeting sectors with strict data residency and compliance rules: finance, healthcare, energy and government.

KINI BIG DEAL

The big idea here is ownership. MetisJean’s CEO and founder, Alex Haywood, says a business can be thrown off track when an AI vendor raises its fees, changes how the tool works or removes a feature. If your whole workflow sits on someone else’s model, you have no say.

That worry is not only a UAE problem. Any African bank, hospital or government office thinking about AI will meet the same questions: where does our data go, who controls the tool, and what happens when the price changes? “Sovereign AI” is becoming the phrase for those questions.
